Three Quick Tips on Choosing the Right Color of Blinds

So you've done your fall cleaning and spruced up your home for winter. Most people spend much more time in their homes during the winter season as they prepare their house for the holidays. Now that your home is looking neat and tidy, you notice that your plastic mini-blinds have yellowed and cracked. Your living room and kitchen need new blinds. Before you pack up, run to the nearest hardware store and buy a box of cheap, white mini-blinds (only to realize that these blinds do absolutely nothing for the rooms that you worked so hard on to freshen up), here are three quick tips on choosing the right color of blinds for your home.

Wall Color

One route you can go is to make those blinds blend into the room by choosing a color that matches your walls. The blinds will seem much less obtrusive and less like a white sheet hanging on your wall when the blinds are closed. If your walls are white, they generally are a certain shade of white. Bright, white blinds on eggshell white walls will draw your eyes to the blinds and away from your decor. However, if your accent color is the same white as your blinds, it could look fabulous!

Wall Trim & Cabinetry

If you want your rooms to seem more structured, match your blinds to the trim in your home. No matter the trim color, adding blinds of the same color will make your room look well thought out with a cohesive flair. If you don't have wall trim but still want that structured look, consider using the same tone or color of your built-ins or cabinets. This will give you the same clean-line effect.

Accent Pieces

The last of the three quick tips on choosing the right color of blinds is accentuating accent colors in your decor. Say you have a favorite green pillow or green is the touch of accent color throughout the room. You can make a bolder statement with those accents by choosing blinds of the same color or tone. This will lead the eye to objects of similar color and make them more noticeable. Play with the colors you love and see how they can complement your room.

Today blinds come in many colors and textures. There is no need to settle for the white mini-blind look. The best rule of thumb is to avoid the "white sheet"  and the "black hole" look on your walls. Your blinds should look as though they were just as well thought out as the rest on your home.
